Setting up Google Analytics to your Shopify store

Google Analytics as well as almost apps from Google are usually helpful for all online e-commerce. And Google Analytics are helpful for Shopify as well but Shopify officially supports and recommends using Universal Analytics.

Universal Analytics  is the latest version of Google Analytics, therefore in this post we will determine the way to set this latest version.

People need to do 4 steps to setup Universal Analytics.

Step 1: Upgrade to Universal Analytics from Classic

Universal Analytics has all the functionality of Classic Analytics and new additional features. Therefore, you should upgrade to Universal Analytics.

  1. Go to Shopify Admin> Online Store> Preferences
  2. Scroll down to Google Analytics and then tap Upgrade to the last version to update the Classic Analytics to Universal Analytics

Step 2: Enable Universal Analytics

  1. Go to Google Analytics homepage> Create an account link
  2. Tap Sign in or Create a new account
  3. Tap Website, then fill the displayed form and fill your primary domain in Web Site URL
  4. Tap Get Tracking ID to complete signup
  5. Code snippet that Google provides:

  1. Select Settings> Tracking Info then scroll down to find the tracking code
  2. Copy the code snippet to your clipboard
  3. In new browser window, access to Shopify admin> Online Store> Preferences
  4. Paste tracking code in to Google Analytics account box
  5. Remove password protection from your Shopify store

*Note: You shouldn’t fill any code in Add additional Javascript box to avoid Display Advertising

Step 3: Turn on e-commerce tracking

There are 2 different degrees of detail as:

  • Basic ecommerce tracking: implement if you want transaction and revenue data
  • Enhanced ecommerce tracking: implement if you want more information about visitor behavior

Enable basic ecommerce tracking

  1. In Google Analytics, tap Admin
  2. In columns Account, Property, View, you can choose anything you want to track
  3. Tap Ecommerce Settings
  4. At page Ecommerce set-up, toggle Status to ON

Enable enhanced Ecommerce tracking

  1. Shopify Admin> Online Store> Preferences
  2. Scroll down to Google Analytics, choose Use Enhanced Ecommerce (if you don’t you the latest version, tap Upgrade to the latest version)
  3. Tap Save
  4. In Google Analytics, tap Admin
  5. In columns Account, Property, View, you can choose anything you want to track
  6. Click on Ecommerce Settings
  7. In page Ecommerce set-up, toggle Status to ON
  8. Click on Next step> Enable Enhanced Ecommerce Reporting and toggle to ON
  9. Tap Submit

Support Display Advertising

  1. Go to Shopify Admin> Online Store> Preferences
  2. In Google Analytics section, copy code

and then paste in Additional Google Analytics Javascript box

  1. Update your store’s privacy policy

That’s all you need to setup Google Analytics to your Shopify Website.
